How to Propose in Australia!

Last updated August 26, 2024

Are you heading to Australia for a holiday and want to propose? Here at My Proposal Co., we plan over 350 proposals a year in Australia, whether that be in Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, Perth… you name the state or city and we’ve planned a proposal there!

Our Australian clients love what we do but did you know that we also plan proposals for international clients making their way over to Australia?

If you have an upcoming trip to our beautiful country, keep reading to see how you can propose in Australia.

Step 1: Decide on Your Travel Dates

First and foremost you need to have an idea of when you will be travelling to Australia, as your proposal plans will be based around your travels! Travelling during the Spring and Summer seasons in Australia will give you stunning late night sunsets and daytime picnics. Whereas travelling during Winter and Autumn is perfect for visiting wineries and exploring the mountains.

It is also good to consider different major events that happen in Australia to base your travel plans around. For example, every year, Sydney hosts VIVID Sydney during winter that attracts thousands of tourists from all around the world. If you are planning to propose by the Sydney Harbour with those epic views, but you prefer to be a bit more private, this may not be the best time of year for you.

Alternatively, you can coordinate your travel plans so that they match up with an event you would like to attend! This year, we had multiple couples fly to Australia to celebrate WorldPride 2023 and we helped them incorporate their proposal into this major event!

Step 2: Find an Australian Proposal Planner

The next step is to find yourself an Australian proposal planner to help you execute the perfect proposal in Australia! By doing this, you will be planning alongside someone who knows the ins and out of proposing in Australia. Not only will they know the best locations for your proposal, but also the perfect time of day to propose and any local council restrictions. This can be a little bit tricky if you are trying to fit your proposal between a tightly packed itinerary. So, your proposal planner can help you figure out how to make your proposal plans work within your itinerary. Your Australian proposal planner will also have direct contact with the best suppliers in the country to ensure you have a breathtaking proposal setting.

You should start planning your proposal in Australia 2 months before you depart on your trip to Australia. This will ensure that your proposal planner can plan the perfect proposal for you and all you have to remember is to pack the ring in your suitcase!

Step 3: Find Your Proposal Location

Once you have your proposal planner sorted, you need to lock in your proposal location. Proposing by a famous Australian landmark is a no brainer for your proposal! This could be proposing by the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House or in the Blue Mountains. For the most iconic Sydney proposal, you can also propose at the top of the Sydney Harbour bridge! If you are travelling to Victoria, you could propose in the CBD to see that epic Melbourne City skyline, or you can venture out to their wine region or beaches! If you want to arrive in style, you can organise a private helicopter flight to land at a winery in the Yarra Valley to kick off your truly unforgettable proposal experience. Each state offers incredible landmarks you must see during your trip.

By proposing near a famous landmark, your partner will not see the surprise coming. They will think you are just out and about sight-seeing! Imagine walking along the Sydney Harbour to check out the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge when you stumble across a beautiful picnic setting with perfect views of the harbour… how romantic!

Step 4: Find your Proposal Photographer

This step may not have crossed your mind yet, however in our opinion this is one of the most important parts to proposal planning! A professional proposal photographer can capture your whole proposal experience so that you have incredible photos to take home with you and share with your family. Not only will they be a beautiful memory of your proposal, but also your holiday in Australia!

Australia is home to many incredible professional photographers that specialise in engagement, wedding and couple style photography. We highly recommend that you book one in to capture your proposal from the moment you get down on one knee to when you are celebrating over a glass of Champagne!

Step 5: Book Your Flights and Accommodation

So, now that you have an idea of when, where and how you are going to propose in Australia, it is time for you to book your flights and your accomodation. We work with some of the best hotels around Australia to give our clients VIP inclusions for their stays. Pier One Sydney HarbourCrown Towers SydneyPark Hyatt SydneySofitel Sydney Darling Harbour and the  Four Seasons Sydney are some of the best hotels to stay at, and that’s just in Sydney! So, the options are endless all over Australia!

As you can’t have a holiday without accommodation… why not propose in a hotel?
Imagine checking-in to your hotel when you arrive in Australia and opening your hotel room door to a stunning proposal setting with “MARRY ME” light up letters, florals, candles and rose petals! …actually, you might be too jetlagged to propose right away ha-ha! Don’t worry, we can sneak into your hotel room when you are out at dinner or out sight-seeing to set up a surprise proposal setting for you. This is a great option if you would like to get those iconic Australian views in the background of your proposal photos, but just want that little bit more privacy for your proposal moment.

Step 6: Finalise Your Proposal Plans

The final step to planning your proposal in Australia is to lock in all of the logistical plans!
You should complete the final run through of your proposal plans with your proposal planner before you depart your home country. This will be the best opportunity for you to get out those nervous jitters! Ask your proposal planner any last questions so that you feel confident with the detailed plan for the day.

As we know that you will be with your partner constantly from the time you land, we recommend saving your proposal planner’s number under a different name in your phone. If they need to contact you at all, it wont ruin the surprise!

Now that you know the nitty gritty details of how to propose in Australia, it is time for you to get in touch to start planning your dream proposal in Australia! We will work out the best time to speak to you based on your international time zone.
