Tucked away in Yarra Glen, Alowyn Gardens is one of our favourite places to plan a garden proposal near Melbourne. Between the 100-metre wisteria archway, the old stone fountain and the neatly clipped hedges, an Alowyn Gardens proposal feels like stepping into your own secret garden.
We’ve planned proposals in almost every corner of these gardens. Each area has its own feel, so the right spot really depends on your partner, the time of year and the style you have in mind. Below, we walk you through each location option, with photos from real proposals we’ve set up there.

Why Choose Alowyn Gardens for Your Proposal?
Alowyn sits in the heart of the Yarra Valley, about an hour’s drive from Melbourne. It’s a beautifully designed garden with several distinct areas, all linked by one long, covered walkway. That means you can choose a big, show-stopping setting or a quiet corner that feels completely private.
Plus, we can book private use of certain areas for your proposal. So you won’t have other visitors wandering through at the exact moment you get down on one knee. Afterwards, you’re surrounded by gorgeous backdrops for photos, and the wineries of the Yarra Valley are just down the road for a celebration lunch.
1. The Wisteria Archway: The Classic Alowyn Gardens Proposal
The wisteria archway is the star of Alowyn. It runs for around 100 metres through the middle of the gardens, and it’s easily the most photographed spot on the property. For a few weeks each October, the arch is covered in hanging purple wisteria. Honestly, it’s one of the most romantic sights in Victoria.
For Chris + Vera’s proposal, we timed everything with the wisteria in full bloom. We filled the archway with soft blue and white florals, then added a round white platform and candles. Chris walked Vera down the arch, and the fountain sat perfectly in the background.

Outside of wisteria season, the archway is still stunning. In summer and early autumn, it turns into a lush green tunnel that offers shade and plenty of privacy. One of our favourite proposals in March was set up under the green archway with a light-up “Will You Marry Me?” sign, lavender florals and a path of candles.

Our tip: Wisteria only flowers for a short window, and the exact timing depends on the weather. If you have your heart set on the purple blooms, get in touch early so we can plan around peak season.
2. The Fountain and Sunken Garden
At the centre of the archway sits a sunken garden with a classic tiered fountain. It’s a beautiful focal point, and the sound of running water adds a lovely calm to the moment. Many of our couples choose to propose in the garden area right in front of the fountain.
For one of our proposals in May, we created a cosy picnic setting facing the fountain. It featured white florals, cushions, candles and a little champagne table, all framed by golden autumn leaves.

Similarly, Arun + Preet had a boho picnic under the archway, with pampas grass, burnt orange florals and the fountain peeking through behind them. It’s a relaxed, intimate option if your partner would love a slow afternoon together after saying yes.

2. The Parterre Garden
The formal parterre garden is laid out in symmetrical beds edged with clipped box hedging and gravel paths. It’s inspired by classic European gardens, and it has a timeless, elegant look.
While it can work for a proposal setting, we especially love the parterre for photos once the ring is on. After their picnic proposal, Arun + Preet wandered through the hedges with their photographer for some beautiful portraits.

5. The Courtyards and Display Gardens
Beyond the parterre, you’ll find a series of smaller courtyards and display gardens. These little nooks are perfect for a more colourful, playful setting, and they often feel very private.

What If It Rains on Your Alowyn Gardens Proposal?
Melbourne weather can be unpredictable, especially in spring. That’s why we always lock in a wet weather plan with the venue, such as the Farmshed Courtyard. We’ll keep an eye on the forecast in the days leading up to your proposal and let you know if we need to switch.
When Is the Best Time of Year to Propose at Alowyn Gardens?
Every season brings something different to the gardens:
- Spring (October): Wisteria season. The archway is at its most magical, but it’s also the busiest time, so book early.
- Summer: The archway becomes a green, shady tunnel. It’s ideal for a late afternoon proposal when the heat has eased.
- Autumn: Golden leaves and soft light. This is one of our favourite times for a picnic proposal.
- Winter: Quieter gardens and crisp, moody light. We’ll add plenty of candles and blankets to keep things cosy.
